School Committee Presentation

BTB Board members and Hammer & Chisel COO, Dorian Botsis, pitched the idea of a Ashland High School service trip to South Africa during Spring Break 2018 under the leadership of Breaking the Barriers and Hammer & Chisel. It was APPROVED!!

Intergenerational Leadership Team Banquet

Wednesday, June 14, 3-4 pm @ Ashland Public Library

A celebration for the successful Oral History project (see more in ‘Projects’, ‘Publicity’, & ‘Gallery’ tab) conducted in March 2017!  BTB members & other community members involved in the project gave presentations about their experience.  BTB members got to reconnect with the senior citizens they interviewed and enjoy great, catered food.  The event was covered by the MetroWest Daily News as well- check out our article!

Inspire: Public Service/Writing

Tuesday, June 13, 6:30-8 pm @ Ashland High School

For the second part of Inspire career & internship series, technical writer and public service advocate, Cece Doucette spoke about her career and the road that led there. There was open Q&A and also an opportunity for interested students to apply for internships and community service opportunities with Mrs. Doucette. Added bonuses were that each attendee was entered in a raffle for a $100 Amazon gift card for free (and could buy additional tickets for $1) and there was free food! This was a community event so parents, students, and anyone else who would like to attend were welcome!

Courageous Conversations

BTB members served as table co-facilitators for a World Cafe style event about diversity and tolerance. They made sure that people understood the questions and diffused misunderstood statements. More info at: Engage Ashland

Volunteering/Baking at ‘Youth in Philanthropy’ fundraiser

Thursday, May 11, 3-8 pm @ Ashland High School

BTB members assist at the Foundation for MetroWest’s Youth in Philanthropy bake sale at Ashland Lacrosse Night by selling baked goods, drinks, & pizza. All profits went to support grants for local nonprofits.

Youth-focused Decisions at Every Turn Meeting with BTB members and middle school ASAP members.  This meeting involves icebreakers & discussion questions for youth to feel comfortable in a board meeting setting. BTB President provides an update on club activities and members actively participate in meeting discussion and planning as well.

South Africa Service Trip Planning Meeting w/ Dorian Botsis

Board members, Ms.Hogan, & Principal St. Coeur discuss logistics and plausibility of a service trip to South Africa for AHS students with Hammer & Chisel COO, Dorian Botsis. Mr. Botsis provides an overview of trip, information about Hammer & Chisel, along with action steps to pursue this trip.

Anti-Defamation League Youth Congress Field Trip

Thursday, March 30, Entire School Day @ Sheraton Boston Hotel

This year’s program, entitled “There Is No ‘Them,’ Only Us,” features a keynote address by Khizr Khan, civil rights advocate and Gold Star parent.  Following his keynote presentation, participants attend breakout sessions that are co-facilitated by experienced student peer leaders who participate in ADL’s Peer Training Program.  Members will be attending this conference as a day field trip.

Members will be working at the Decisions at Every Turn Coalition booth to spread awareness about the organization and its cause in the community.

Inspire program: Doctor

Inspire is an after school program, sponsored by BTB, which gives students the opportunity to learn about a professional’s career, education, and daily work experiences along with time for a Q&A session and being provided shadowing opportunities.  The first part of this series features Dr. Rajani LaRocca, Harvard Medical School alum and Mass General internal medicine specialist, and Ashland High alum and BS/MD student at Boston University, Abraham Cherukara.

Spark program

The Spark program is a leadership summit, created/led by BTB, for fifth-graders in the Mindess Student Council to foster leadership qualities from a young age.

Intergenerational Interview Field Trip

This was the active experience of youth interviewing seniors for a video produced by the Ashland Historical Society which will premiered later spring 2017.

Wednesday, March 15, 2-3 pm @ AHS Main Office Conference Room

With the help of the Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging, the Bridges Together organization has helped create  a community-wide Intergenerational Leadership team that connects youth with elders in the community. BTB is working with the Ashland Historical Society, Youth and Family services, and the Decision at Every Turn Coalition to work on an oral history project with adults 80+ and youth from middle and high schools.  This training is to prepare students for this upcoming interview field trip.

Members help distribute and spread information about the Decisions at Every Turn Coalition at community events, such as this annual faculty vs. faculty basketball game.

Selected members participate in different tracks of the National Youth Leadership Initiative, connect with students across the country, and speak to Senators and Representatives at the State House on Capitol Hill.
